Serie Riberas was created to develop a line of excellent quality wines whose outstanding feature is their freshness. This search led to vineyard plantings on the shores of the most important rivers in Chile’s major wine growing regions.
Cabernet Sauvignon originates from the shores of the Tinguiririca river, D.O. Marchigüe; Carmenere from the Cachapoal river, D.O. Peumo; and Syrah from the Loncomilla river, D.O. San Javier. The white varieties, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are from the Itata river shores, D.O. Chillan and the Rapel river, D.O. Colchagua, respectively.
The enormous hydrographic basins that constitute the rivers’ topography act as corridors for cool ocean breezes which temper day temperatures well into the land.
In addition, the river basin corridors are low-lying lands in which cold air accumulates during the night. This creates a unique thermal pattern, providing bursts of freshness for the grapes and greatly increases development of the wine grapes’ most noble properties.
In general, wines originating in river basins have highly developed tannins because fresh nighttime temperatures help form thicker skins on berries and thus a higher potential for tannins and flavonoids, particularly in the case of red wines.
The bursts of freshness slow down and allow for greater control over the grapes’ ripening process. Aromas and flavors have greater complexity, concentration, elegance and personality, as when foods are allowed to “simmer” in cooking.
The climatic conditions in these corridors are practically unique in the world. The “coastal Mediterranean” climate is very special and characterized by luminous, hot days and notably cool nights, even in summer.
Serie Riberas wines focus on rivers as a differentiating element, giving origins a fresh look and in turn highlighting one of the many geographical riches of Chile.
